L'Oro di Spello

In the cooler months (exact date varies by harvest time) Spello celebrates L'Oro di Spello, Literally translated as "The Gold of Spello", the festival is an opportunity to honor the gifts of the olive tree. The culmination of the event is the procession of elaborately decorated olive trees down the streets of Spello. There is much singing of ancient tunes, drinking of warm, spiced wine, and reverence for Spello's agricultural roots. You can find more about the festival in my memoir, Il Bel Centro: A Year in the Beautiful Center, available instantly here or on other marketplaces here or in print in Amazon here.

L'Oro di Spello is Spello's celebration of the new pressing of olive oil from the local mill, and the historic place that oil (via bruschetta) has had in the town's history. Children participate in the parade, as well as spending the preceding month drawing olive trees.
